However, there is a slight difference of the cleaning process based on different finish of the hardwood floor. Basically, there are two common types of finishing – wax and polyurethane finishing. Therefore, each finishing has its own distinctive way of cleaning – there is a particular way of cleaning such flooring although there are a few acceptable alternatives which are mainly used to clean hardwood floor.

Thus, here’s the common guide on how to clean hardwood floor effectively:
  1. Remove dirt and debris- Initially, use a vacuum cleaner or a broom to clean off the dirt and debris. It is a beginning step before you start dampening the floor. Furthermore, it avoids unnecessary scratches and marks resulted from the friction between the hard particles and the floor during the mopping process.
  2. Slightly wet the floor before cleaning- Most homeowners experiencing fast abnormalities on the hardwood floor because they are using too much water during the cleaning process. Depends on the size of the floor, if you can use a wet sponge to dampen your floor within a small area, or a use mop for large floor area. Never pour water on the area which has small holes and cracks, as water should not seep into such area or it would soon affect the sturdiness of the flooring material. If you have accidentally splash a large amount of water on the floor – don’t panic, just use a dry cloth to wipe it dry.
  3. Clean hardwood floor with the right solution- The most economical and convenient way of preparing cleaning solution is by mixing vinegar and water. Most people would usually use commercial hardwood floor cleaners which are available at most convenient stores. Slowly pour the mixture on the floor and gently scrub it with the sponge, or just clean it with the mop. To get rid of the irremovable stains, gently scrub it with a toothbrush and rinse well with water.

All wood floors need regular vacuuming and mopping. You can use a broom, a dust mop, or a vacuum cleaner to remove the dust and dirt. Make sure you clean all the areas including the hidden spaces under the furniture. For cleaning wood floors, you can move the furniture and clean underneath them. If you do not clean properly, dust and dirt accumulate and they enter the pores of the wood. Now, as the first part is finished, start mopping from one corner. The best kind of mop for wood floors is a microfiber mop. Plain water should not be used to clean hardwood flooring. However, it can be used to clean some types of engineered wood flooring.

To clean engineered wood flooring, dip the microfiber cloth in water and squeeze. You should not squeeze all the water out. At the same time, it shouldn’t be dripping. Make sure you do not pour water on the floor, as this may damage the flooring. Mop the entire floor, until all dirt is gone and the floor is sparkling clean. You can repeat this process for cleaning wood floors, if necessary. To clean solid hardwood flooring, you can use hardwood cleaning products recommended by the manufacturer. Use of plain water can destroy hardwood floors.
